What is Toothache?

Toothache is pain caused by infection, inflammation or damage to the teeth or tissues around the teeth. Toothache can be caused by problems in the tooth itself, as well as problems in surrounding tissues such as gums, jaw bones, sinuses or jaw joint.

Causes of toothache include tooth decay, gum disease, tooth extraction, cracks or fractures on tooth surfaces, clenching or grinding of teeth, jaw joint problems, sinus infections and intraoral injuries.

Toothache is usually felt as a sharp, throbbing, stabbing or excruciating pain. The pain may increase when in contact with hot or cold foods. When toothache is caused by problems in the surrounding tissues, symptoms such as swelling, tenderness or redness may be seen in addition to pain.

Toothache is usually treated by a dentist. Depending on the condition and cause of the tooth, treatment may include methods such as tooth filling, tooth extraction, root canal treatment, tooth cleaning or surgery.
